We’ve all been to our share of weddings that were just a little on the stuffy side. Formal and traditional is one thing, but some celebrations just seem to end up a little too conventional, to the point that it can be somewhat of a challenge for guests to loosen up and relax.
Luckily, as longtime veteran wedding videographers of NYC & NJ who’ve been a part of celebrations of all kinds, we’ve seen our share of wonderfully relaxed atmospheres, as well as plenty of stuffy parties. So, we thought we’d pass on a few tips to help you end up with the former.
Set the tone early.
First of all, you don’t have to wait until your actual wedding day to start setting the tone you want. So, if that tone is a more relaxed and casual one, then start taking that approach early on with your invitations. How? Well, you can start by going light and fun with the design.
Then, as far as the language itself, you can take a more personalized approach rather than using the same old words and phrases. Think about it, if the tone you’re going for is less formal and more casual, then it only makes sense to use less traditional wording on your invitations.
From there, you can also simply alert your guests to the intended tone of your wedding in your invitations. Don’t be afraid to just come out and say that you and your partner are planning for a more relaxed atmosphere. That way, your guests can plan accordingly.
Switch up some of the classics.
One of the best ways to make for a more relaxed reception atmosphere is to mix up your food situation. Whether you go family or buffet style with your courses or you take an even more casual approach by planning a barbecue or something of the sort instead of a formal dinner, trust us, it’ll go a long way toward lightening things up.
You can also try putting some twists on the traditional activity portions of your reception. For example, you could forgo the dancing and encourage guests to simply talk and mingle instead, whether you have a general standing area in which to do it or you create some lounge areas where people can congregate.
On that note, having some lounge areas scattered around your reception area is a great way to create a more relaxed atmosphere in general. For some tips on doing it, check out this post, 3 Tips from Vets of Wedding Videography in NJ for Creating an Awesome Lounge Area.
Involve your guests & encourage interaction.
One of the main reasons that some weddings end up feeling a little too stuffy is the simple fact that many of the guests just don’t know each other well enough to let their guards down. Sure, you and/or your partner may know all your guests well enough to do that, but most of them won’t.
So, you may want to consider planning some ice-breaking games for your cocktail hour or early at your reception to get people to start mingling and getting to know one another. Just remember not to do anything that puts people on the spot and makes them uncomfortable because that’s just the opposite effect you’re going for.
Coming up with ways of making your guests more involved in the celebration can also help to create a much more casual, collective atmosphere. For instance, you could do some kind of group vow at your ceremony, pass around your rings for each guest to personally bless, or make your guest book a little more interactive by asking for a little note or some words of wisdom. You get the idea.
If your guests aren’t relaxed, it’s a problem.
The bottom line is, even if you and your partner are planning a more traditional, classic wedding celebration, chances are you’d still like your guests to relax. That’s the only way to ensure your celebration is truly unforgettable. We hop these tips help and good luck!
