When you’ve been to as many weddings as our longtime NY & NJ wedding photographers have, you end up coming across a lot of wedding cakes. Some are all about the taste and deliciousness while others are more about the visual effect, but one thing you can always expect is for there to be certain trends at any given time.
As always, the hard part is separating the worthwhile ones from the passing fads. So, we thought we’d save you some of the trouble and pass on some of the current cake trends that are actually worth looking into. Read on to find out.
Florals, they are a-changing.
Okay, so floral patterns and actual flowers on wedding cakes are nothing new. In fact, they’re some of the simplest twists on the classic cake, but couples are doing some much more creative things when it comes to flowers and their cakes nowadays. And judging from the example above, it’s not hard to see why!
So, what kinds of creative things? Well, some couples are taking floral dressings to new levels by getting more elaborate with the look and design, for example, and others are going so far as to actually have the flowers spill off the cake onto the table. Think of it as the “Cascading Flowers” cake.
Then there’s the option of having floral details hand-painted onto your cake rather than using the real thing or edible versions of it. Take it from us as longtime NY & NJ wedding photographers, the couples who are going that route are ending up with some truly eye-popping cakes!
Watercolor is in.
What geode and drip wedding cakes were to 2017, watercolor cakes could be to 2018 and, again, it doesn’t take more than one look at the picture above to see why. The light, hand-painted look can easily take your cake from a simple dessert to one of the main focal points of your entire reception.
You have options, too. For instance, you can stick with the floral details, have a marble design painted on, or have your baker take a more abstract approach. In the end, that’s up to you and finding the right baker for the job, but the point is that you can apply the watercolor trend to almost any kind of cake.
Plenty couples are keeping the clothes off.
Some trends just have a way of sticking around forever and it’s probably safe to say that this is one of them at this point as plenty of wedding couples are still head-over-heels for the naked cake. If you’re unfamiliar with it and its unique allure, check out this post, The Naked Wedding Cake: Should Yours Take It All Off?
The bottom line is that newlyweds-to-be just can’t get enough of this style, especially those having rustic celebrations as the naked cake is the perfect fit for that type of look. However, that’s not the only reason to strip your cake. It’s also great for newlyweds who’d prefer a little less frosting and more ingredients like fruit.
You can also keep your cake somewhat covered up by going with a semi-naked cake like the one pictured above and for some more visual examples, check out this post from The Knot, 10 Naked Cakes You Have to See.
Then there’s always the classic.
While there are a few other trending cake styles at the moment, it’s also worth mentioning that you can expect to see the return of the classic this year as well. Traditional piping and pillars are coming back, but if you’re not a traditionalist, then we hope the options above get you pointed in the right direction. Good luck and congrats!
