Let’s face it, not everyone has unlimited funds when it comes to their weddings. In fact, that’s a pretty rare occurrence and no matter the size nor style of the celebration you’re planning, you can always use a good money-saving hack. After all, while you want your wedding to be as unforgettable as possible, you don’t want to have to break the bank to pull it off, either.
So, as longtime NY & NJ wedding videographers who’ve been to weddings of all shapes and sizes, we thought we’d pass on a few hacks we’ve picked up along the way to cutting back. That way, whether you end up needing to use them or not, at least you’ll have them in your backpacker or up your sleeve just in case.
Hack #1: Compromise and condense when it comes to time & place.
Right off the bat, one of the best ways to save some money when planning your wedding is by carefully choosing the date, even compromising if need be. If you had a certain time of year in mind, for instance, then you may find that you can save some serious cash by setting the date in a different season.
Most venues also offer lower rates, often much lower, on weekdays, so that’s another compromise you may want to consider making and then there’s the location itself. First of all, you may be able to save money by going with a more unconventional venue like a nearby restaurant with a nice celebration space, but you could also always condense all the events of the day to a single spot.
Think about it, not only will you often find a better package deal when having both your ceremony and reception at the same place, but you’ll also save on both transportation and decor costs as well. You’ll only have the one location to worry about.
Hack #2: Wait for your opportunities and then strike!
One of the keys to saving money when planning your wedding is starting early. It’s not that you can’t plan a wedding in six months or less, because you can, but just that compromises will inevitably need to be made when time is of the essence. You won’t have the advantage of being able to sit back and wait for the best times and deals.
If you do start nice and early, though, then there are so many ways it can help you save. You’ll be able to book your venue and order your dress super early, for example, and you’ll have plenty of time to research all your vendors to see who really gives you the most for your money. You’ll also be able to wait for deals and big sales.
On top of that, depending on when and how early you get started, you can also put aside any and all extra money that comes in during the planning process to put toward your wedding, whether it’s birthday or Christmas gifts, tax returns, etc. For some more tips on saving for your big day, check out this post, Tips for Saving Up for Your Big Day from Longtime NJ Wedding Videographers.
Hack #3: Go buffet style.
Rather than serving plated dinners to each guest, another great way to save a little money is to take the buffet approach instead. Just allow your guests to walk up to the tables or food stations and serve themselves. Not only will they get to choose whatever they like, but it’s also a great way to get guests mingling!
The real plus, though, is that serving your food buffet style won’t require as many servers. Yes, you’ll still need some there to provide water and beverages to tables and perhaps a few at the food stations, but the point is that you won’t need as much help, which means it’ll cost you less. From there, you may also want to order wedding-day items like programs and menus at the same time as your invitations to cut back on printing costs and, on that note, using one menu per table can also save you some cash. The same goes for reusing ceremony chairs at your reception and only ordering late-night snacks for a portion of your guests since many will have likely left by then.
