When you’ve been doing wedding videography in NJ for as long as we have, you come across all kinds of receptions and reception activities. Yes, the traditional approach usually involves a combination of eating and dancing with a few speeches and maybe a customary ritual or two in between, but more and more couples are choosing to take a more non-traditional route these days.
So, if you’re thinking about planning some activities or games for your reception besides the basics mentioned above, then know that you’re not alone, and if you’re looking for some ideas then you’re in luck. Like we said, we’ve been to a lot of receptions over the years. Read on to learn about a few of the activity ideas we’ve come across along the way.
Plan some idea-gathering games.
We all know that a cleverly funny or especially heartfelt guest speech can be the highlight of any wedding reception. Whether it’s because there’s a little alcohol involved or the speaker is just that good, there’s just nothing like a great wedding speech. However, there’s no reason that the speakers have to be the only ones passing on their thoughts and ideas on your big day.
Coming up with some fun ways of gathering ideas from your guests will not only give them a chance to share their thoughts, it’ll also make for a very fun reception activity. One way you could do it would be to leave cards on the guest tables or somewhere else asking your guests for their best advice or words of wisdom for your marriage, or you can get a little more playful with it.
For instance, you could ask your guests random questions like, “What should we name our firstborn?” or “What’s the best way to keep the flame alive?” You could also ask them for suggestions about the perfect date night for you and your partner. You get the idea and trust us, it’s practically impossible for this kind of activity not to be fun for guests, and yourselves!
Plant some mad-lib story cards.
Let’s face it, mad-libs never seem to get old. They’re just endlessly fun, which is why weaving them into your wedding reception is a no-brainer, and there are so many fun ways to do it. You don’t even have to wait until the big day, either. You could make some mad-lib invitations to set the tone from the start.
You could also create mad-lib guest books for everyone to sign, but our favorite application is to have mad-lib love story cards placed at all your guests’ seats at their tables. Whether it’s a fill-in-the-blank version of your proposal story or of your and your partner’s journey together as a couple, it’ll make for a fun situation.
And just like the idea-gathering games discussed above, the best part about this activity is that it won’t just make your reception more unique and fun; it’ll also leave you with something to look and laugh at long after the big day has come and gone. Pair up some drinks and foods.
Okay, so this doesn’t really sound like much of an activity compared to the ones discussed above, but let’s face it. This is a wedding we’re talking about here, and while some guests will be game for participating in some planned activities, there are always plenty of others who will just want to hang out and have a good time.
So, why not plan an “activity” that doesn’t actually require much activity? And make no mistake, while that’s exactly what a drink & food pairing is, that doesn’t mean that it can’t lead to more interaction and socializing just like any of the more demanding activities can. It’ll gather people together and give them a shared interest to talk about. Take it from us, sometimes that’s all they really need.
So, whether you get an expert to handle the pairing or yourself or one of your guests is pretty well versed on the subject, planning a pairing can be just the “activity” your reception needs.
Our NY & NJ wedding videographers know how much more memorable a reception can be with the right activity.
The bottom line is that we’ve all been to our share of traditional weddings and while there’s absolutely nothing wrong with going the conventional route, it can make the guest experience just a little redundant at times. That’s why planning a fun activity to break things up is such a good idea, and while you have plenty of options, we hope the ones discussed above help. Good luck!
