When it comes to getting great wedding photos, it’s not just about finding really good photographers with a ton of experience. Yes, that’s a big part of it, but there’s also the chemistry between you to consider, their personalities and styles, and whether or not all that is a good fit for your celebration.
So, we thought we’d pass on a few tips for the early part of your picture-planning process. That way, with any luck, you’ll get off to a good start and, take it from us as longtime NY & NJ wedding photography pros, that can absolutely make the difference between great pictures and not-so-good ones.
Start making a visual rep of your likes, dislikes, & favorites.
Before even considering the who, you need to think about the you. Okay, so what does that mean? It means that there’s no point in starting to look into potential photographers for your big day until you first determine the specific kinds of pictures you want, if there are any. Only then should you start your search for the right people for the job.
One of the best ways to start narrowing down your unique vision for your wedding photos is to start some kind of visual representation of all the various images that you like or that inspire you. They could be other wedding photos, magazine pictures, screenshots from movies or television shows, social media posts, etc.
The point is that it’s always a good idea to start creating some sort of visual representation of the images that impact you, including the ones that do it in a particularly negative way for some reason. It could be a physical picture board, a Pinterest board, etc. However you do it, it’ll help not only with formulating your vision but also with communicating it to your photographers.
Keep the research rolling.
Once you’ve formed a pretty clear, or at least copious, representation of the specific kinds of images that inspire and that you want to inspire your wedding photos, it’s no time to let your foot off the gas. Even if you still have plenty of time to go before your big day, there’s still a lot that needs to be done.
So, roll right into researching all your potential photographers and, now that you have a firm idea of what you like and dislike, it’ll be that much easier. You’ll be able to quickly filter out the ones whose galleries of work don’t align with your vision, but don’t stop at simply browsing their galleries.
It’s also a good time to start asking around, especially if you have any friends or relatives who got married relatively recently. Check out their photos and if you like them, then ask them about their photographers and their experience working with them. After all, there won’t be any trust issues with your own family and friends.
Schedule an engagement shoot!
No, we’re not just saying this because we happen to do wedding photography in NJ. The truth is, while an in-person meeting is always a good idea as opposed to a phone call when it comes to your consultations, there’s nothing like actually getting out there and working together. No meeting can tell you what that will.
That’s why we strongly recommend doing an engagement photo session or some other kind of pre-wedding shoot once you find photographers whom you really like. You’ll get a chance to experience their process and get a feel for how they treat people while they’re doing their thing. Trust us, it could be a far cry from how they behaved during your in-office meeting.
On top of all that, pre-wedding shoots are also great for newlyweds-to-be who aren’t so comfortable with a camera being pointed at them. Going through the process before your wedding in a much less crowded and chaotic environment can go a long way toward putting you at ease once the big day arrives.
We’ve been doing wedding photography in NJ for long enough to know that your early efforts can make all the difference.
The bottom line is that it’s never too early to start planning your wedding photography. It’s just too important of an occasion and the preserving of it in pictures too valuable. So, get started right away. We hope these tips help you do it on the right foot. Good luck!
