It’s no secret that wedding days can get a little hectic at times, if not a lot. The key is to try your best to remain in the moment and let the small stuff slide so that you can enjoy it. After all, chances are that by that point, you’ll have put a ton of time and effort into planning the celebration.
But that’s also precisely why things can get so stressful. It can be somewhat of a challenge to switch from being a planner to a partyer, but it’s necessary, and not just for having a good time either. Stress will also show in your pictures and video(s), and it doesn’t tend to look great. Luckily, our New Jersey wedding photographers know a few secrets to keeping the stress at bay.
Secret #1: Plan the celebration you want.
We know. It sounds simple enough, right? Well, we’ve been doing this for a long a time and you’d be surprised by how many couples end up compromising too much when it comes to planning their wedding celebrations. No one’s saying that you shouldn’t compromise at all, but just that most of it should be happening between you and your partner rather than others.
Trust us, one of the biggest causes of wedding day stress has to do with the newlyweds listening to too many other ideas and opinions during their planning. It almost always results in the couple then basically attending a party that barely resembles the one they’d imagined when they first decided to get married. That creates discomfort, which creates stress.
So, always remember to plan the kind of celebration that you want, the kind that truly aligns with your and your partner’s personalities and styles and with your unique love story. Then, it’s just a matter of being realistic with your expectations, but at least you can take comfort in the fact that it’s truly your day.
Secret #2: Set some private time aside.
We’ve been doing wedding photography in NJ for a long time and we’ve worked with plenty of newlyweds-to-be who couldn’t be more comfortable and relaxed on their big day, but we’ve also worked with plenty others who were anything but, whether it was because of the cameras themselves or just typical wedding day stress. Either way, it’s perfectly understandable.
However, simply setting some time aside for you and your partner, along with your photographers of course, to go take some pictures alone can be a big help. People don’t tend to feel nearly as self conscious once the crowd’s gone and it’ll also give you a chance to get away from all the chaos for a bit.
On top of all that, setting some time aside to take some shots alone is also a great way to show off your venue’s spaces or scenery, without all the clutter, and remember that you can always save your alone time for later in the evening so that you’re guaranteed that some nighttime pictures make it into your album.
Secret #3: Properly prepare for group photos.
Sometimes, no matter how well the newlyweds planned their wedding day timeline out, when it comes time for group photos, everything seems to start to unravel. It’s understandable, too. Make no mistake, simply gathering together the right people in the right place at the right time can be challenge, and all that has to happen before a single picture is taken!
That’s why it’s never a bad idea to consider reaching out to the necessary guests before your big day, possibly via their invitations, or just letting them know on the day-of not to leave after the ceremony or something of that nature. How, exactly, you do it is up to you, and you could also enlist some help for your group photo time. For more on all that, check out this post, New Jersey Wedding Photographers Share Top Tips for Gathering the Troops for Group Photos.
Then, once you gather the troops, some guests may not be so cooperative, there may be feuds between family members, etc., so the best bet is to warn your photographers abut any such feuds or issues between group members beforehand and then just try to listen to them when the time comes.
We’ve been in NJ wedding photography for long enough to have heard all the secrets.
The bottom line is that when you’ve been in the wedding business for as long as we have, you come across all the secrets to keeping the stress out of your pictures, but you can never have too many. After all, this is your wedding day we’re talking about here, not a dinner party. So, we hope these tips help to get you the kinds of pictures you’ve been dreaming of to preserve it all. Good luck!
