Being a wedding guest isn’t what it used to be. There’s the fact that almost everyone has a phone with a nice camera on them at all times, for instance, which can make it very tempting to become a guest “photographer,” and then there are all the changes in weddings themselves and how couples are choosing to celebrate them these days.
So, being that we’ve been in NY & NJ wedding photography for years now, we thought we’d pass along a few helpful tips for guests rather than the normal advice for newlyweds-to-be. After all, we’re all in this together. Read on to learn more.
1. Always be aware of the pros.
Look, if the wedding couple didn’t hire any professional photographers, then snap away. You don’t have anything to worry about, but if they did enlist the help of some pros, then you need to stay mindful of that at all times. Think about it, they didn’t spend the money for no reason, and you don’t want to be the one that makes it all a waste.
So, while you should feel free to try to find your own angles to see all the major moments, as well as take your own pictures, you should always take a quick glance around the room or space to get an idea of where the actual wedding photographers are. That way, you can figure out a way to enjoy to festivities and get your pictures without ruining their shots.
You’d be surprised at how many otherwise great wedding photos are rendered completely useless just because a guest stood right in the wrong place at the wrong moment and got directly in the shot, whether it was because they were trying to take their own picture or just get a better view of the action.
2. Never interrupt the moment.
Wedding days are filled with important, life-changing, unforgettable moments. That’s what makes them wedding days, which is why it’s so important to do all you can as a guest to help preserve those moments and memories, and why the last thing you want to do is to somehow interrupt or distract from them.
For example, while things happen and guests sometimes arrive late, you should never walk into a ceremony right in the middle of the proceedings. If you’re a little tardy, then it’s best to just cut your losses and hang back until you have a window and can join the party without turning every head in the house your way.
The point is that you were invited to the wedding to support the newlyweds-to-be and celebrate their love story with them, not to distract from the experience of seeing another chapter added to that story. So, always be mindful of whose day it is and why you’re all there together, and never interrupt the moment as it’s happening, because it’ll only happen once.
3. Don’t forget to enjoy yourself.
If you’re one of those people who just loves to document everything, then you’ll probably be taking a lot of pictures at an event as special as a friend or family member’s wedding, and as long as you’re not constantly getting in anyone’s way, then there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.
However, you don’t want to focus so much on getting great shots that you forget to actually enjoy the moments and have a good time. Remember, this is a wedding we’re talking about, not a museum visit. You shouldn’t be solely focused on documenting everything. In fact, that should come secondary to enjoying the party.
So, make a point to put the phone or camera down once in a while and take in your surroundings. Remember that you were invited there to support the newlyweds and enjoy this occasion with them, and if they did hire professional photographers, then there’s no reason for you to have to worry about capturing every single moment.
