We talk a lot around here about the value of engagement photos and that’s not just because we happen to be New Jersey wedding photographers. Not only does scheduling an e-shoot give you a chance to get more beautiful pictures with which to tell your love story, but it also gives you the opportunity to work with your photographers and get a feel for their process and personalities.
For some basic tips, check out this post, Wedding Photography Tips: How to Make the Most out of Your Engagement Session, but the bottom line is that once you’ve scheduled one, there are some tricks that can help to ensure you get the most out of your session and you can never have enough of them in your pocket. So, read on for a few more.
1. Make it about yourselves and tell us about yourselves.
We cannot stress enough how important it is that you and your partner don’t get too caught up in any trends or any other couple’s methods or approaches. No one’s saying that you shouldn’t look for ideas and inspiration wherever and whenever you want, but just that your own personal love story should dictate your decisions more than anything else.
If certain trends or ideas align with your and your partner’s own unique story and styles then that’s one thing, but don’t force any into your shoot nor try to copy or mold your engagement session into something that’s not you. At the end of the day, it’s your story. So, use any and everything you want to tell it, but just don’t tell someone else’s.
From there, be sure to tell your story ,complete with all the unique little details, to your photographers. Trust us, it’ll only help to ensure that the end results are everything you’ve been dreaming they’d be.
2. Do anything you can to focus on the moment.
Whether it’s your engagement or wedding photos, being able to relax and focus on the moment is always key to getting great shots. If you’re worried or posing too much or anything of that nature, then it’ll show in your pictures. And we get it, it’s not always so easy. For some tips on that, check out this post, Tips for Loosening up for Your Wedding Photos.
So, while distractions don’t tend to be a good thing when it comes to getting great pictures, in this case, a few of the right ones can be. For instance, it’s never a bad idea to bring some fun props along to your engagement session or to incorporate some kind of activity that you can do together into your shoot.
What, exactly, that activity would be depends on you and your partner, obviously, and the things that you enjoy doing together because you want it to feel natural, but the point is that it’ll give you something to focus on besides trying to look good in your pictures. On top of that, fun activities and props also tend to make for some great additions to pictures.
3. Establish some type of relationship with your photographer(s) first.
Like mentioned at the top, one of the best parts about engagement sessions is that they give you and your partner a chance to really get to know your photographers and their process. That way, once your wedding day rolls around, you’ll feel a lot more comfortable with them and what they do. However, what about before the engagement shoot?
After all, you’re not just scheduling an e-shoot to get to know your photographers but to get great pictures as well, which is why it’s always a good idea to have some type of meaningful interaction with your photographer(s) before your engagement session, too. If you can meet with them in person, great, but if not then a phone call should do.
The point is that you don’t want to sacrifice getting great engagement photos just because you didn’t do anything to gauge the chemistry between you and your photographers ahead of time. No, you won’t likely be able to actually work with them before your e-shoot, but at least you’ll know a little more about their general personalities and styles.

When done right, that is. When you find the right people and do what it takes to make your engagement photo session as perfect as possible for you and your partner, then it can be as beautiful a chapter of your love story as any other. We hope these tips help you write it. Good luck!
