Okay, so you’ve just gotten engaged to your partner, which officially makes that person your spouse-to-be, now what’s the first thing you should do? Celebrate! Take your time to enjoy the milestone, because that’s exactly what it is and you deserve it. But when you’re ready to start planning your actual wedding, it can be a bit of a challenge to figure out where to start.
Luckily, we’ve been doing wedding videography in NJ for a long time, so we know a thing or two about what it takes to plan one, as well as how best to begin. Read on for a few tips so that you have a better chance of getting off to a good start, because trust us, that can make all the difference.
Start formulating your vision.
Everyone has their version of their dream wedding and you should absolutely do your own research to make yours as clear as possible, but weddings also happen to include two people, which is why one of the first things that you should do when it comes to planning your wedding is explaining to each other how each of you envision the celebration looking and feeling.
That way, you can start to discuss how to merge those visions to together, which will help to ensure that your celebration is ultimately a perfect blend of both of your dream weddings, but more importantly, a lot of your decisions will depend on your joint vision. Hence the need to get to the discussion early on in the planning process.
Think about it, it may be that there’s a certain season that would be perfect for the vision you’ve both decided on, in which case you’d need to choose a certain wedding date. Or perhaps you and your partner will realize that you both envision a smaller affair, which would dictate the size of your guest list. You get the idea.
Think carefully about the when.
We get it. Once you tell all your friends and family members that you and your partner are officially getting married, then they’ll all be wondering and asking you about when the big day will actually be, but don’t rush to an answer. Don’t even rush to choose a date once you and your partner have sat down and discussed your joint vision for your celebration.
Take it from us, choosing the actual date deserves a lot more thought than that. For instance, depending on the season, there could be some holidays or other previously planned family events taking place at that time that you may want to factor into your decision. After all, you don’t want any love ones to miss your wedding just because of a previous commitment.
It’s not just that, either. You also need to carefully consider how much time you and your partner will realistically need to plan. If you’re having a fairly casual celebration, then it may not be so much, but if you’re planning a more elaborate affair, then that could take a while and you want to give yourself enough time to put all the pieces together.
Then move quickly to the where.
Again, your joint vision for your wedding celebration will have a lot to do with your choice of location and venue, which is why you need to get to that step so soon, but from there, always keep in mind that venues tend to book fast, especially those in high demand. So, once you know your when, move right on to your where.
If you’ve left yourself enough time, then you should be fine, but don’t get dejected even if your top pick is already booked. If it’s a busy time of year, then that can happen, but trust us, you can still make your dream wedding a reality. From there, move right onto the other vendors that tend to book up fast.
For example, wedding videographers and/or photographers, bands and DJs, caterers, florists, hotel blocks, and hair & makeup people are all vendors that don’t tend to stay available too long. The point is that once you know what you want and when the best time for that is, then you need to start booking the best people for the job.
Our NJ wedding videographers know you can’t relax just yet, but you can take a breath.
No, you don’t want to wash your hands of all this wedding planning business at this point just because you’ve gotten some of the major hurdles out of the way, but make no mistake, those are a lot of the major ones. Starting to plan without first knowing what kind of celebration you ultimately want nor when you want it won’t lead to your dream wedding.
So, again, if you’ve just gotten engaged, then don’t jump into your planning process just yet. Enjoy it, but just remember that when the time comes to begin, it’s critical that you get started on the right foot. We hope these tips help, Good luck!
