When it comes to finding the right vendors for your wedding, you really do need to think of the process as putting together your team. After all, these are the people who you’ll be working closely with to ensure that your party goes as planned and that all the big moments and memories are preserved.
But our New Jersey wedding photographers have been doing their thing in the business for long enough to know that finding the perfect members for your team isn’t always as easy as it sounds. So, we thought we’d pass along a few tips that should help.
1. Do your homework.
No matter which vendor you’re preparing to meet with, there’s always some homework that you can do on your end that will help you to find the right people and make the right choice. That includes doing things like looking carefully into the vendor’s websites and galleries, yes, but that’s not all the homework you can do.
For instance, reviews and testimonials can be incredibly telling, and while there’s nothing wrong with looking into all your potential vendor’s own websites, you should also take a close look at how they’re evaluated and reviewed on wedding planning sites and directories like The Knot and WeddingWire.
Then there are all your vendor’s various social media pages to consider, which can also say a lot about the vendor’s ability and what it’s like to work with them, but the bottom line is that you should do all the evaluating you can on your own before meeting with any vendors. That way, you won’t just be showing up blindly for their sales pitch.
2. Make chemistry a top priority.
When it comes to potential wedding vendors, some of the most important factors are usually pretty obvious. For instance, if you’re meeting with a baker then you’ll need to see proof that he or she can actually make the specific kind of cake you want, and if you’re looking into photographers then you need to review their galleries for the kinds of pictures you want.
You get the idea, but the truth is that while some of the big factors to look for may be pretty obvious with most vendors, many newlyweds-to-be fail to recognize just how important of a factor the chemistry between them and their potential vendors is. Make no mistake, that could absolutely make a huge difference in the end results and in your experience with them along the way.
So, put chemistry at the top of your list of factors to look for when meeting and speaking with all your potential vendors. You don’t need to be best friends, but make sure you can converse naturally, that there’s a sense of trust between you, that they don’t annoy you, etc. The point is that discussing all the details won’t matter much if you can’t stand nor work with each other.
3. Take your time.
One of the biggest mistakes you can make when it comes to finding your perfect vendors is failing to leave ample time to make your decisions. That’s why it’s so important to think carefully about which vendors may book up fastest and to try your best to meet with them way ahead of your wedding date.
Yes, part of it is about ensuring that your date isn’t already filled, but it’s also about having time to really sit down and think about each and every vendor choice you have to make. You never, ever, want to rush to a decision nor put yourself in a situation where you have to simply because your big day isn’t very far away.
Think about it, you’ll need time to debrief after each meeting and evaluate any notes you may have, to speak with your partner about your feelings and first impressions, to check any possible vendor references, to meet with competing vendors so that you can compare, etc. So, make sure to leave yourself plenty of it.

The bottom line is that choosing your vendors isn’t just about finding the best deals. It’s about finding the best people for the job, and that job happens to be your wedding day, one of the biggest days of your life.
So, just remember that it’s a more involved process than you may think, and that you need to give it the time and thought it deserves in order to make the best decisions for your celebration. We hope these tips help.
