Our New Jersey wedding photographers have seen their share of surprises in their time in the business, whether it’s some kind of surprise entertainment or event planned ahead by the newlyweds themselves or their wedding party, or it’s just something a guest does unexpectedly during the celebration.
And while wedding surprises can be both good and bad depending on their nature, one that’s really gaining some steam among newlyweds-to-be is the surprise ceremony, which is exactly what it sounds like. It’s obviously not for everyone, but if you’re still interested, then read on to learn more about it.
Why consider a surprise ceremony?
First of all, it’s worth mentioning that surprise weddings aren’t exactly a new thing. Yes, couples have taken that approach in the past here and there, but we’re not talking about regular newlyweds-to-be. We’re referring to celebrity couples, who’ve been planning surprise weddings to avoid unwanted attention from the press for a long time now.
But while that’s obviously not an issue for the everyday couple, there are other reasons to plan surprise ceremonies, as many newlyweds-to-be are finding out. Like what? Well, there’s the entire planning process to consider, which doesn’t tend to require nearly the same kind of time nor effort when you’re having a surprise wedding celebration.
Think about it, you won’t have to worry about things like late or missing RSVPs, the constant barrage of annoying questions from relatives, and all the other stresses that often turn the wedding planning process into a logistical nightmare for so many couples. On top of all that, taking this kind of approach almost always requires less money as well, and that’s always a plus.
What to know if you’re going that route.
If you do decide to have a surprise wedding, then it all comes down to how good you are at keeping a secret. After all, you’ll have to bill the wedding as some kind of engagement party or other type of event to keep it a surprise and trust us, that’s easier said than done for many couples.
As for the when and where, they’re completely up to you. You could do it on some special day or you could even plan a surprise ceremony on the very day you propose, surprising your partner as well. As far as the location, it could be a hall, your home, or just a spot with some type of sentimental value for you and yours. Again, it’s totally up to you and your partner.
From there, though, there are the guests to consider, who you may send scrambling to adjust to the surprise, perhaps adding more money to their envelopes, once they find out that it’s not some everyday party but a wedding they’re attending. They may not be dressed up like they would be for a wedding, either, and there is potential for some close to you to feel duped, so you’ll need to prepare for things like that.
We’ve been in NJ wedding photography for a long time and surprise ceremonies are a sight to see.
The bottom line is that while surprise weddings are not for every couple, they do make for quite the show. We’ve all been to our share of traditional celebrations, but guests will never forget coming to what they believe to be some kind of regular party or event only to find out that it’s actually your wedding day.
So, if you and yours are dreading the planning process or you’re just looking for ways to make your big day stand out, then a surprise ceremony and celebration is worth some serious thought. One last tip: videography is extremely important when planning a surprise celebration, especially if you and/or your partner will be in hiding until the big reveal. You’ll want to be able to go back and relive what you missed.
