While weddings are all about happy times and the future, we’ve been in wedding photography in NJ for long enough to know that there is one part of the equation that can be a little sad, and that’s the fact that the groom’s best buddy will be “losing” his compadre to the bride.
So, high school sweethearts-turned-newlyweds Brittney and Kody decided to have a little fun with this “tragedy” by making the groom’s best friend a part of their engagement photo session, and once Country Roads Photography shared the hilarious results and they went viral, the couple decided to repeat the gag for their wedding day photos.
You can see the photos here, but being that our New Jersey wedding photographers have created their share of original and hilarious pictures in their time in the biz, we thought we’d share their reactions and tips on the idea of the “heartbroken best man” shot.
What do our photographers think?
That it’s awesome. Our photography team’s seen plenty of hilarious best-man speeches in which the groom’s best bud pokes fun at the idea of losing his longtime companion to the bride, but this takes the joke to a whole other level. It’s just another great addition for the engagement and/or wedding photo album.
And the best part is that there’s really nothing to lose. Think about it, it’s not as if you and your partner have to include the best man—or the maid of honor if you want to go that route—in each and every picture taken during your engagement session or wedding day. So, you’ll still have plenty of other moments and emotions captured for your photos.
But the bottom line is, if you and your partner are looking for ways to add more uniquely funny pictures into the mix, then this is a great way to go. There’s absolutely no downside and so much potential, but make no mistake, simply making the “heartbroken best man” shot a part of your picture plans and actually pulling it off are two completely different things.
Commit, commit, commit.
In the end, the effectiveness of your “heartbroken best man” or “heartbroken maid of honor” photo will depend as much on you, your partner, and the third wheel as it will on your photographers. Yes, it’s a very funny concept, but you only need to take one look at Brittney and Kody’s viral pictures to see that the main reason they work is that the subjects fully committed.
This is one of those shots that requires you to go all out. You need to sell it for it to really work, and for some, that’s not the easiest of tasks, especially those who aren’t naturally comfortable on camera. So, what can you do to ensure that all involved are fully committed to pulling off the “heartbroken” shot?
Well, first and foremost, you need to find wedding photographers who you feel comfortable around and who you know will have the ability to make everyone feel at ease. That’s the most important thing, and from there, tell the third wheel to try to do his or her best to let loose and live in the moment. Don’t worry about the cameras and just have fun with it!
Our New Jersey wedding photographers think this trend could turn into a timeless favorite.
Some wedding photo trends and ideas seem so amazing or hilarious at the time of their popularity only to ultimately age, their effectiveness wearing down over time, but our photography team’s been in the business for a long time, and they firmly believe that the “heartbroken best man” or “heartbroken maid of honor” shot could have what it takes to withstand the test of time.
Just remember that if you do decide to make it a part of your picture plans, then you need to be prepared to fully commit. Good luck!
