Our NJ wedding videographers have seen their share of speeches in their time in the industry. After all, most newlyweds want the speeches captured for their wedding videos, and that makes sense, as they’re often some of the most emotional, funny, and memorable parts of any wedding celebration.
Often, however, is the key word there, because wedding speeches can also be among the worst parts of a wedding day. So, we thought we’d pass on some tips from our seasoned pros so that your speech ends up being one of the day’s bright spots, rather than one of its biggest disappointments.
1. Don’t take it lightly.
No one’s saying that you need to be worried sick about giving your speech throughout the entire time leading up to the big day, but you do need to take it very seriously. Yes, there should be some opportunities to be light and funny within your speech, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t give your full focus to the process.
After all, being one of the speakers at any wedding is kind of a big deal. It means that you’re an important member of the newlyweds’ circle, and that you’re going to be a big part of one of the biggest days of their lives, so don’t treat it all like a big joke, no matter how many you’re weaving into your speech.
That doesn’t just mean that you need to take the content of your speech seriously, either. You also shouldn’t put off your preparation and writing of your speech for too long. You’ll want the time to really think about it and brainstorm, and to write multiple drafts until you get it just right if need be.
2. Follow the basic structure.
When it comes to wedding speeches, it’s best to stick with the tried-and-true natural flow, which usually entails beginning with an introduction to who you are, your role in the wedding, and your relation to the newlyweds before talking a bit about how you met them. If you’re a parent, sibling, etc., then you can talk about what the newlywed was like growing up.
From there, it’s always a good idea to jump right into a great story or memory from your past with the bride and/or groom. Just remember that this is a wedding we’re talking about, so while the story should be touching, funny, or otherwise entertaining, you need to make sure it’s appropriate for the entire audience.
Then, just sprinkle in some compliments about the pair, whether it’s about each of them separately or about the two of them as a couple. What makes them so perfect together? What amazing, inspiring qualities do they possess as a couple?
Lastly, thank the couple and their guests, congratulate the newlyweds, give them your best wishes, and invite the crowd to raise their glasses for a toast. And as far as your best wishes, if there’s ever a time during your speech to get completely mushy, then that’s it, so don’t be afraid to get a little emotional there at the end.
3. Practice and remain calm.
For some wedding day speakers, the whole thing is a breeze, but for those who aren’t so comfortable with public speaking in general, things can be a bit more tricky. So, if you fall into the latter category, then it’s critical that you practice as much as possible leading up to the big day.
Practice in the mirror, in front of close friends or relatives, etc. Then, use your reaction or their feedback to dictate any adjustments. Trust us, we’ve been in wedding videography in NJ for a long time, and practice truly does make perfect, or at least as close to it as possible when it comes to wedding speeches.
Again, though, it’s not just about getting the timing and rhythm down, either. Like mentioned above, practicing a lot will also go a long way toward calming your nerves and helping you feel at ease once the big moment arrives.
