While all your wedding day’s pivotal moments as well as the intimate ones shared between you and your partner and all the dance floor fun will absolutely make for some amazing wedding pictures, you can’t underestimate the power of the bridal portraits.
Trust us, we’ve been doing wedding photography in NJ & NY for long enough to know that those shots can make for just as beautiful additions to your photo album as any others. It’s just that, like anything else, there are some do’s & don’ts and tips & tricks to getting beautiful bridal portraits. Read on to learn about a few.
1. Don’t just try your dress on.
Of course you should try on your dress before your big day. That goes without saying, but while most brides-to-be don’t need to be reminded to do that, many just stop there. They think that once they’re sure that their dress fits nicely, then they can move onto the next phase of the planning process.
However, comfort and confidence are key to looking good in any pictures, especially bridal portraits, which is why it’s so important not to just try your wedding-day attire on beforehand, but to give it a solid test run. Put on your dress, shoes, and any other accessories and then move around. See how freely you can do simple activities.
2. Get plenty of rest.
Whether you’re scheduling a separate, pre-wedding bridal portrait session with your photographers or you’re just doing it on the day-of, it’s critical that you get plenty of rest before taking your bridal portrait pictures. Yes, that’s always important, but with bridal portraits, you’ll be the sole and primary focus.
For some more tips on what to do to ensure you look your best for your pictures, check out this post, What to Do the Night Before Your Wedding, but the point is that all eyes will be on you. So, you need to be completely calm, cool, and collected, and some good old rest & relaxation will go a long way in that regard.
3. Don’t neglect your prep time.
Again, some brides prefer to schedule a bridal portrait session separately from their wedding day, and if you’re going that route, then this tip doesn’t apply to you. But if you’re doing it all on the day-of, then you need to make sure there’s plenty of time for pictures during the prep portion of the day.
You may even want to plan for your wedding photographers to arrive during the hair & makeup styling so that they can get some shots of the tail end of that part of the preparations, before moving onto the bridal portraits. For more on that, check out this post, Wedding Photography Tips for the Bridal Prep.
4. Don’t overthink it.
The beauty of bridal portraits is their simplicity. Like mentioned above, the bride is the sole focus, and while that means that you need to take measures to ensure you look your best, it’s also why you need to keep the shoot simple, too.
Don’t move from location to location or add too many props, for example. Bridal portraits are all about letting the bride shine. So, don’t overcomplicate or clutter the pictures. Just keep things clean and simple.
