Our New Jersey wedding photographers have worked and witnessed celebrations of all sizes and styles in their time in the business, which is why they’ve seen every wedding-day mistake under the sun committed once or twice.
So, we thought we’d put our vast NJ wedding photography experience to good use and pass on a few tips to ensure that you and your partner avoid some of the more common mishaps on your big day.
1. Give yourself a break.
One of the most common issues we hear from brides and grooms just after their weddings is that their big day felt like it flew by and that they were, for the most part, just too caught up in the chaos to actually enjoy the festivities.
That’s why it’s so important to set aside at least a few moments to get away from it all, whether you do it by yourself or just you and your partner spend a little alone time together, even if it’s just to relax your face muscles!
Because make no mistake, all that smiling for pictures will eventually cause your face to stiffen up and your smile to appear awkward or forced, so giving yourself a few moments to loosen up and reset will go a long way.
2. Don’t sweat the small stuff.
And there will be small stuff. That’s just the nature of weddings. There are simply too many moving parts, too many variables, to ensure that everything goes off without a hitch, no matter how great a job you do in the planning process.
So, the key is to prepare for the worst and then, once your big day actually arrives, to just be ready for little mishaps and issues, whether it’s an important guest running late, a piece of the decor not looking exactly like you envisioned it would, etc.
The point is that we’ve been in NJ wedding photography for long enough to know that every wedding comes equipped with its own set of hiccups, and that you’ll be far better off trying to take them in stride than getting bent out of shape over every one.
3. Embrace the unexpected.
Like mentioned above, no wedding plays out exactly as the newlyweds envisioned. That’s just how it goes, but while not allowing yourself to get irritated by hiccups is critical, it’s also important to embrace them when you can.
For instance, if you imagined a sunny outdoor photo session yet the weather doesn’t cooperate, rather than looking at it as a problem and letting it ruin your plans, why not try to let the circumstances alter your plans instead by taking awesome rain pictures or using a stunning indoor space?
The bottom line is that every couple wants their wedding photos to be more unique to their own styles and personalities and to the specific kind of wedding they’ve planned. So, try to look at unexpected issues as opportunities to make your celebration more original rather than celebration-enders.
4. Have a trusty emergency kit nearby at all times.
If you haven’t gotten the message yet, then this should really make it loud and clear. Wedding days rarely go exactly as planned and your ability to deal with that will be key to your wedding day experience.
That’s where a well-stocked emergency kit comes into play. You can include some wardrobe and cosmetic options for touch-ups, for example, health-related items like aspirin, water, sun block, feminine care products, and band-aids, and some miscellaneous items.
It could be a small pair of scissors, safety pins, a handkerchief, an extra cell phone, scotch tape, matches, etc., but the point is that it’s better to be safe than sorry, and for more on that, check out this post, How to Prepare the Perfect Emergency Kit For Your Wedding Day.
We’ve seen plenty of day-of’s in our time in NJ wedding photography.
As you can see, just because you’ve made it to your big day, that doesn’t mean you’re out of the water just yet. So, we hope these day-of tips don’t just help to make your wedding-day experience more memorable, but for the right reasons. Good luck!
