Every pair of newlyweds-to-be wants to end up with a beautifully epic wedding video that really tells the story of their big day. It’s just that few realize what, exactly, goes into getting that kind of video.
Trust us, we’ve been doing wedding videography in NY and NJ for years now and not every single videographer is capable of creating your dream video. So, we thought we’d put together a little guide for ensuring you find the right people for the job.
It’s not just about what they can do, but what you want.
Yes, you’ll want talented wedding videographers capable of producing quality, cinematic, emotionally impactful content, but finding the right videographers for your wedding isn’t just about what they’re capable of doing, but also what you want to get out of your wedding video, specifically.
For example, do you want a video more on the traditional side which essentially documents all the day’s important details & events and lets them speak for themselves, or do you want something more creative, artistic, and unique?
For more on some of the different wedding video styles, check out this post, The Wedding Photography Styles You Need to Know, but the point is that you need to do your homework before meeting with any videographers, and if when you finally do their style and tone doesn’t align with your vision for your video, then they’re probably not the right people for the job.
Look for the right signs & flags in the videographers’ galleries.
Once you know what you want, then you can start to look for specific evidence in your potential wedding videographers’ work that proves they can give it to you, and what that evidence will be depends on the kind of video you’re looking for.
For instance, if you envision a video filled with emotional candid moments, then you’ll want to look for plenty of those kinds of shots in their galleries. And if, instead, you see plenty of the traditional moments captured but few candid, then that may be a red flag.
From there, though, there are obviously some more general signs and flags to look for. You’ll definitely want to see effective compositions and lighting, for example, and smooth, intuitive camera movement, clever or creative use of space, etc.
For more on that, check out this post, What to Look for in Your Potential Wedding Videographers’ Galleries, but the bottom line is that looking through your potential videographers work isn’t as simple as browsing for professional-looking shots.
Ask them the right questions, and as many as you want.
As veteran wedding videographers in NY and NJ, we can’t say enough about how important it is to meet with the people you’re thinking of working with in person. Yes, there are more ways than ever to avoid that these days, but unless it’s absolutely necessary, you shouldn’t. Why?
Because that’s the only way to get a true sense of their personalities, behavior, and communication style, all of which will play important roles in the creation of your wedding video.
So, ask them how many weddings they’ve shot, and not just any, but how many that were similar in size, style, and tone to your upcoming celebration. What are the specific differences between their packages? Have they worked at your specific venue before? Do they specialize in a certain style?
Ask them all the questions you deem necessary, and to learn about a few more that you definitely don’t want to forget to ask, check out this post, It’s Time for Some Answers: Questions to Ask Before Hiring Your Wedding Videographers.
Chemistry and collaboration will be vital.
You should also use this in-person meeting time to see if the videographers are short or rude in any way, and to try to get a sense of the chemistry between you as well as how collaborative they’re willing to be, especially if you have a pretty clear vision for your video.
But no matter how you approach it, just remember that finding the perfect wedding videographers isn’t just about finding professional, talented people but the right professional, talented people for your wedding day. Good luck!
