If you’re in the process of planning your wedding, then you probably already know how important checking out the testimonials of the vendors with whom you’re thinking of working is. After all, for the most part, there’s no reason not to trust them.
The thing is that we’ve been in NY & NJ wedding videography and photography for long enough to know that it’s not as simple as checking out the number of stars and skimming to get the gist. Yes, there are positive reviews and negative ones, but even among the positives there are levels. Read on to learn more.
The “Average Joe” Testimonial
Like mentioned above, if you come across a bunch of glaringly negative reviews, then you should obviously continue searching for a different vendor, but when it comes to positive testimonials, this is the middle ground.
These kinds of reviews are shared when the vendor was just pretty good. There may not be much, if anything, to complain about, but there’s not much to get too excited about either.
You’ll hear or read lines like, “They were on time,” or, “They did their best,” and while there’s nothing wrong with those kinds of comments, you need to read between the lines and take them for what they are.
If you go with an “Average Joe” vendor, then you can likely expect similarly mediocre results. So, if you’re looking to cut costs in that particular area then that’s one thing, but if you’re looking for exemplary work, then keep looking.
The “Love at First Sight” Testimonial
As NY & NJ wedding videographers and photographers who’ve met with a lot of newlyweds-to-be in our time in the business, we like to think that while we can show couples what we do via the web, email, etc., it’s in-person that we get to show them who we are.
That’s why we understand when couples leave their encouraging meetings with their vendors and immediately go write a review expressing their excitement, and we very much appreciate when they do it for us.
However, if you’re looking through testimonials like that, then you need to be able to recognize that initial excitement for what it is. If it’s clear that the couple hasn’t actually worked with the vendor yet, then it’s probably not a very telling review.
Now, it obviously won’t always be all that easy to tell if the reviewer has actually experienced working with the vendor yet, but just try to remember that these types of “positive” reviews do exist and can be very misleading.
The “Genuinely Glowing” Testimonial
From there, the best kind of positive testimonial you can get is one that indicates that the couple hasn’t only experienced working with the vendor but has also come away from that experience feeling that their expectations were far exceeded.
Trust us, you’ll know these when you see them. The newlyweds often won’t just express their appreciation; they’ll also likely include a lot of specific details that made them feel so satisfied with how everything went.
It goes without saying that if you come across any reviews like these, then you’re probably on the right track, especially if come across a whole bunch of them for any particular vendors.
Don’t be fooled!
The bottom line is that testimonials are one of the most important clues when it comes to determining which vendors are right for your big day, but that doesn’t mean that you can take every single one of them at face value.
Even among the seemingly good ones there may be some subtle red flags, or pink flags, if you will. We hope this post helps you decipher their codes. Good luck!
