Look, there’s nothing wrong with getting videographers to simply document all the details of your wedding day. After all, a lot of the day’s big moments will speak for themselves, but that’s not cinematic storytelling.
Cinematic storytelling isn’t just about capturing the day’s special moments but highlighting and enhancing them, and as longtime New York & New Jersey videographers, we know a thing or two about the difference, as well as how to tell love stories cinematically. Read on to learn more.
Traditional = Point & Shoot
Like mentioned above, traditional wedding videography is all about making sure that each and every pivotal moment of the wedding ceremony and ensuing celebration is captured in its entirety.
That’s why there tends to be a lot of long, continuous shots. The videographers essentially just need to follow the newlyweds around throughout the day, and if simply capturing everything is all you want, then that’ll work just fine for you.
The thing is that if all the focus is simply on ensuring that every important moment and event is recorded, then there’s not much room for creativity. In fact, the traditional approach doesn’t really require it.
Cinematic Storytelling = Highlight & Enhance
While the traditional approach is all about recording all the significant moments, the cinematic storytelling route is all about doing that in a creative and artistic way which helps to enhance the ultimate impact those moments have once they’ve been preserved in video form.
When you get wedding videographers who shoot in this style, you get people who aren’t just concentrating on how to avoid missing moments, but how to record them in such a way that it better tells the couple’s unique love story.
The whole point is to make the newlyweds as well as all their friends and family members who watch their wedding video feel not just like they’ve been instantly transported back to the big day, but like they’re witnessing a Hollywood-movie version of it.

Watch closely, not every storyteller tells cinematic stories.
While all the advancements in videography technology have led to plenty of benefits for both videographers and newlyweds, they’ve also led to a lot of so called video storytellers who, in reality, don’t actually tell the most cinematic stories.
So, how do you separate the tellers from the sellers? Well, first and foremost, you look at their galleries of previous work. And don’t just check out their highlights either. Check out at least one couple’s video in its entirety.
That way, you won’t just see the story that the videographers are trying to tell you about their company and their work, but also the story of a pair of newlyweds-to-be who were once in the same place that you’re in now.
You also need to monitor the way the videographers communicate with you. Do they want specific details about you and your partner, or are they just asking the basics? The point is, look for signs that they’re looking to tell your love story, not just any love story.
Make sure your wedding video’s endlessly rewatchable to you.
Our whole goal as NY & NJ wedding videographers is to give the couples we work with a version of their love story that they want to return to again and again. It’s not just about capturing moments, but preserving them in the fashion they deserve, and the fashion the newlyweds want.
So, when it comes to choosing between conventional wedding videographers and cinematic storytelling artists, it’s really up to you. It comes down to the kind of video you find enjoyable personally.
If you just want to see your big day’s special moments play out again exactly as they did when they happened the first time, then a traditional cut may do it, but if you want something that feels like your very own Hollywood love story, then you’ll need people capable of telling it.
