If you’ve been dreaming of one of those wonderfully elaborate, classic frosted wedding cakes, then go for it, but if not, then know that there are other options. And one of those alternatives is the naked wedding cake.
What is it? It’s exactly what it sounds like, and as New York & New Jersey wedding videographers who’ve shot our share of cakes, we can tell you that these variations of the old-school desserts truly are a sight to see. Read on to learn more.
What are naked wedding cakes and where did they come from?
Again, naked wedding cakes are exactly what they sound like. Rather than a carefully structured cake coated in icing and/or wrapped in fondant, these cakes are layered with frosting, but the exterior remains bare.
The result, when done correctly, is more striking than you may think, and if you think that your cake will be lacking in visual beauty without the frosting, you can always add fruit or flowers to the design to spice it up a bit.
You can also add some fruit or caramel sauces of some dribbled chocolate as well, but the truth is that the whole allure of the naked cake has a lot to do with the fresh, farm-to-table food craze happening at the moment. It’s all about showing off the inner beauty and homemade work, and the naked cake does that.

Should you get a naked wedding cake?
First off, if you’re having a rustic wedding celebration, then a naked cake is a great fit. It just aligns with the style, so you can look at it as yet another way to make your celebration more rustic. And if you just aren’t into the overly sweet style of dessert, then that’s another reason to consider a naked cake.
It’s not that it can’t be just as sweet as an iced cake, because it can if your bakers use extra frosting in between the layers, but again, they can use less frosting and more fruits and/or other ingredients instead to make a cake a little less on the sweet side.
On top of all that, take it from us as longtime NY & NJ wedding videography pros, naked cakes are still a new enough concept to function as a stunning piece of decor, regardless of the style of wedding you’re planning nor your personal tastebuds.
It’s up to you.
In the end, though, it’s entirely up to you. Naked wedding cakes, like anything else, aren’t for everyone. If you just love that classic, traditional, smooth, silky frosted cake, then you shouldn’t change a thing about that.
But if you’re having a rustic celebration, you’re not into overly sweet desserts, or you’re just looking for ways to make your celebration, menu, etc., more unique, then you should give it some careful thought.
And know this, as long as you find the right baker, you won’t be sacrificing a thing when it comes to taste.
