There’s a big difference between just documenting your wedding day with a video and telling your love story with one. Yes, many of your big day’s special moments will speak for themselves, but the process still requires a more creative approach.
That’s the only way to end up with a video that does more than simply document the details, and who doesn’t want a wedding video that has the power to make whoever watches it feel like they’re watching a rousing, epic Hollywood film?
Every pair of newlyweds-to-be want that. So, as longtime wedding videographers in NY and NJ, we thought we’d pass on a few tips and tricks we’ve picked up along the way for making your wedding video look, and feel, more like a movie.
Find the right people.
Some wedding videographers specialize in certain styles. Some are simply better at one thing than another. That’s just the way it goes, which is why it’s so important to have a good idea of what you’re looking for in your wedding video before even starting to determine who’s best suited to make it.
And when cinematic is the name of the game, you need to remember that if you find a videography company with plenty of proof of their vast experience in creating very traditional wedding videos, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re the best people for making something more “movie” like.
If, on the other hand, you end up meeting with videographers with a more cinematic background, whether it’s in making corporate videos, short or feature films, etc., then they may be the better bet.
It’s not that there aren’t any videographers who can both get the more traditional shots and also make something on the more cinematic side. There are people like that. It’s just that there are plenty who aren’t, and you need to make sure you’ve got the right people for the job.
Make sure they have the right tools.
Now, finding the right people for the job doesn’t just entail making sure that their style and background is a good fit. Yes, that’s a big part of it, but you need to make sure they have all the right tools for the job as well.
The truth is that there’s only so much you can do in terms of set-up when it comes to weddings. So, even if you’ve found videographers with the right experience and background, that doesn’t mean they’ll have the tools it takes to bring the cinematic style to a wedding, specifically.
We’ve been in wedding videography in NY and NJ for years now, so we know full well how important it is to find the right balance between getting the most cinematic, impactful shots possible and not disrupting the actual wedding day experience.
It’s a fine line, but one that has to be walked, and whether it’s something as simple as a slider or solid editing software, or a more substantial piece of equipment like a drone or steadicam stabilizer (for smoother shots), having the right tool makes that walk a whole lot easier.
So, make sure your wedding videographers have the right tools for pulling off the kind of cinematic wedding video you’re dreaming of before making any decisions.
Say the right things and ask the right questions.
We always encourage all the couples we work with to ask any and every question, voice every concern, pass on any thought, etc., when meeting and/or speaking with them. It only makes the process easier and the desired result more clear.
No matter what kind of wedding video you’ve been dreaming of, you and your wedding videographers will need to be on the same page throughout the entire process to have any chance of actually bringing those dreams to life.
That’s why it’s so important to make sure you find people who you and your partner mesh with, people you’re comfortable with, and to make sure that the lines of communication between you remain open before, during, and after your wedding day.
And when you’re going for that “movie” look, you need to be upfront about your mission from your earliest meetings. Tell them about any specific details, shots, and elements that make up the cinematic wedding video you’ve been dreaming of and ask as many questions as you feel necessary along the way.
To learn about some other questions you may want to ask, check out this post, It’s Time for Some Answers: Questions to Ask Before Hiring Your Wedding Videographers, and look at it this way, if the videographers don’t respond well to your questions or concerns, then it’s probably a sign that they’re not the right people for the job.
Remember, you can’t force cinematic.
While you can plan and prepare a recipe for a cinematic wedding video as best you can, you can’t force it. As badly as you want to look like you’ve strayed from the big screen into your wedding video, you can’t force it to happen.
Think about it, Hollywood moviemakers work extremely hard to make their movies look and feel as authentic as possible. So much goes into creating that illusion each and every time because they know that viewers need to be able to believe what they’re seeing on screen to be moved by it.
And while you may be tempted to try to pull off some Hollywood trickery of your own, take it from us, you should try to resist that temptation. Why? Well, for starters, you’re probably not a Hollywood moviemaker nor Oscar-winning actor or actress.
If you are, then by all means, go for it, but for the rest of us, we’re far better off just living in and enjoying the authentic moments that make up our wedding day. Trust us, they’ll be plenty. There always are, and for some tips on putting some of the inherent wedding day stress aside so you can do that, check out this post, Tips for Loosening up for Your Wedding Photos.
All you can do is do all you can.
In the end, getting the kind of cinematic wedding video you’ve been dreaming of will obviously have a lot to do with the big day itself as well as the kind of videography package you go with. More shooters equal more angles, more time equals more shots, etc.
But the bottom line is that there are some measures you can take, and a few you can refrain from taking, to better your chances of making your wedding video look like a movie. We hope this post helps. Good luck!
