If you and/or your partner are looking for ways to spice up your wedding photos a bit, there are so many options. You can choose a unique theme, make inspired stylistic choices, bring some fun props into the equation, etc.
For some ideas on that last one, check out this recent post, 7 Prop Ideas for Making Your Wedding Photos Unforgettable, but today’s post is all about a relatively newer trend, and that’s the use of colored smoke bombs.
Why use colored smoke bombs?
We’ve been in wedding photography in NY and NJ for a while now and we can tell you that things like sparklers and colored smoke bombs truly do add such a unique and whimsical element to any wedding photo.
For some great examples of the former, check out this post from Fstoppers.com, Sparkler Photos That Brides Will Love, but the thing about smoke bombs is that they’re obviously not for everyone.
The result is something of a spectacle and may not suit more formal wedding photography plans, but again, if you and/or your partner are actively looking for ways to make your photos more your own and are okay with getting a little unconventional, then colored smoke bombs may be just the thing.
What to keep in mind.
Now, the one thing about smoke bombs as opposed to some of the other common prop options is that they can backfire, literally, so you, your partner, and your photographers need to be careful if you do decide to utilize them.
Burns, fires, and, knock on wood, any type of explosive situation are obviously the primary concerns, but you also need to think about stains. Try to keep a little distance between you and the actual smoke, especially if you’re the bride in a white dress.
The smoke can also irritate some people’s eyes and/or throats, and the smell, like that of any smoke, can get into your hair and clothes and remain there, longer than you’d like.
As longtime NY / NJ wedding photographers, trust us, the best bet is to speak with your photographers about the situation as early in your planning as possible. That way, you can see if they have any experience with smoke bombs or if you may need to enlist some professional help just in case.
The point is that smoke bombs can be dangerous if not handled and disposed of properly. It’s also a good idea to bring some water bottles along just in case and to steer clear of any extremely dry environments and elements.
How to use them.
Now, as far as how to actually go about using smoke bombs in your wedding photos, the possibilities are limitless. Again, it’s not the most conventional prop, so you’re free to pretty much do whatever you want with them, within reason of course.
You can have your wedding photographers or a willing friend or family member run circles around you and your partner with the smoke bombs or just have them engulf you both in the colored smoke, but many couples prefer to hold the smoke bombs themselves, whether over their heads or at their sides.
Some like to go for a smokey kiss while others choose to embrace the spontaneity and just have fun with it, and that’s really the whole point here: to inspire fun and fun moments, because they’ll make for great pictures, and they’ll be inherently original.
