As longtime wedding photographers in NY and NJ, we can tell you that it’s the shorter the better when it comes to creating a list of must-have shots for your wedding photographers for your wedding day, but it’s a long day, and a second blog installment was necessary nonetheless.
To see the first list of must-have photos for your wedding album, check out this post, The Major Must-Have Wedding Photos: Part 1, but for now, let’s not waste any more time.
Here’s the rest of the major must-have moments that you need to make sure your wedding photographers will be capturing for your photo album.
The Walk Down the Aisle
This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments and while it’s not a photo that wedding photographers typically forget to take, it’s too important not to mention. The walk down the aisle is one of the most important parts of any wedding album and a photo most brides treasure forever.
The Groom Awaiting
While getting a shot of the groom walking down the aisle is great too, the groom awaiting the arrival of his bride-to-be at the altar is a true must-have shot. These moments often produce some of the most memorable emotions and expressions and it’s one shot you’ll absolutely want captured for your album.
Sweeping View of the Space
As important as capturing the little details is, you’ll also want one or a couple sweeping shots of your ceremony and reception space(s). Remember, you chose your location(s) for a reason, so make sure your photographers capture the full scope of the venue or area.
The Tables & Decor
We’ve been in NY / NJ wedding photography for long enough to know that the smallest details can make the biggest difference in any wedding album. So, make sure your photographers know to photograph all the stand-out decorative details as well as the tables, chairs, table centerpieces, etc.
Of course the “We Did It” shot must be included in your photo album. Whether your guests are throwing rice, flower petals, etc., this is often one of happiest moments to capture and is a great transition piece in any wedding album.
The Food & Drinks
You’ll want some photos of the food you served at your wedding, any signature cocktails you and your partner concocted for the affair, and, of course, your cake. Just like the wedding dress and rings, the wedding cake is a symbol of love and unity and another great way to appeal to some other senses in your album.
If you have a DJ, make sure to get some photos of the DJ. If you have a band, a performer, dancers, etc., it’s important to include them in your album. They’ll be a very important part of the celebration and you’ll want a reminder of all they added to your wedding day in your album.
When you’re feeling nostalgic about your wedding later on down the line, one of the best ways to jump right back into the spirit and emotion of the day will be to flip to the pages in your album with the pictures of the dances. Whether it’s your first dance, the father-daughter dance, or the mother-son dance, these are often some of the most emotional parts of any wedding and are must-have moments for your album.
You’ll also want your wedding photographers to capture reactions both from your guests during your ceremony and throughout the entire celebration and from you and your partner during speeches from family and friends. These kinds of shots will bring a smile or a tear to your face later on in life, guaranteed.
Kids & Animals
If you have any pets, young relatives, or children of your own, make sure to include photos of them on your list. They’ll make for adorable additions to your album and it’ll also be great to look through your photos later when the kids in the picture are grown up.
Lastly, of course, is the grand exit. Whether you’ll have your guests or wedding party forming a sparkler archway for your exit, you’ll be doing the classic “Just Married” getaway, or you’ll be doing both or some other type of exit, make sure to include that on your must-have list. It’s a great way to end the love story that you create with your photo album.
You should tell your wedding photographers to keep their eyes peeled for special, candid moments and let them know about anything else you particularly want, whether it’s aerial shots, particular angles or distances, etc.
And if there are any elements of your wedding that you’ve spent a lot of time on, whether it’s the escort cards, guest book, signs you made for the reception area, etc., make sure to tell the photographers to get some shots of them as well.
The point is, there may be photos that, to you, are absolute must-haves, yet won’t be to your photographers, and it’s up to you to include them on your list.
